Art of TRE Series: Safety & Connection
It’s an exciting time for TRE as it has grown and matured with Providers and Trainers from many countries contributing their knowledge and skills to this emerging field.
That’s why we created the Art of TRE workshop series — to highlight the creative and unique ways TRE Providers are applying their gifts in the TRE sessions they lead. This next workshop, with TRE Trainer Mariano Pedroza from Brazil, will highlight his unique presence and approach, but also a universal truth about our presence as Providers.
The following are highlights from a dialog with David and Mariano are an exciting prelude to what we can expect from this next workshop in this series…
Safety and Connection
Mariano: Safety and connection are the prerequisites for leading a TRE session. They are a dynamic process that can change several times throughout a session. How you respond to your client strengthens the sense of connection, reestablishes safety, attunes provider and client, and lets them know that “they are not alone”.
David: Yes, clients need to be really “seen” before doing interventions. Often Providers are not watching what’s present in the moment, instead thinking about what to do next. What the client needs in the moment is so much more important than trying to figure out what to do next — a failure of the popular “trauma-informed” cookbook approach to client work.
David: Be YOU. You don’t have to imitate others; follow yourself, allowing your inner sense of self to connect with the client. Learn to think for yourself.

About Mariano
Mariano Pedroza is a therapist and educator dedicated to disseminating Mind/Body and Systemic (relational) methods that favor the natural health-recovering mechanisms, the capacity for self-regulation, the refinement of awareness, and the development of empathic human connection. His approach emphasizes the importance of building and strengthening people’s autonomy and valuing the knowledge acquired from cultural heritage and life experiences.
Born in Brazil, Mariano left at the age of nine and lived in Ivory Coast, Angola, Senegal, France, the USA, and Thailand. Adapting to such different cultural contexts had a deep impact on his upbringing and world view, developing his sensitivity and respect for cultural differences while, at the same time, teaching him about the deep transcultural humanness that is intrinsic to us all.
In the past 30 years, he has accumulated vast clinical experience as a Bioenergetic Analyst and Somatic Therapist. As a Trauma Consultant, his passion is empowering individuals, institutions, and communities to be more resilient and have a more participative/active role in the maintenance of their physical and emotional balance.
